Rio Lagartos Yucatán attracts people from all over the region, country and world with its famous flamingos, authentic (not touristic) culture, bustling yet mellow ambience. The primary industry here is fishing, while there is a growing tourism industry, and lodging and restaurants are growing exponentially.
For a small town, Rio has many conveniences. The supply line to Rio is generally excellent, with plenty of grocery stores and a small, daily market which always has an abundance of fresh, (mostly regional with some imported) produce.
There is a gas station and numerous restaurants featuring fresh seafood and many different types of food vendors with their specialty offerings. The vibe here is happy and lively, with many annual festivals, music and dancing.
Rio Lagartos has a medical clinic and ambulance, and is only is only 35 minutes to the region hub Tizimin (with a hospital and more shopping); 45 to the Ek Balam ruins; 1.5 hours to the Chichen Itza Ruins; 1.5 hours to Merida; 1 hour to Valladolid and 2.5 hours to Cancun airport, and within a short day-trip to many other ruins, cenotes and other settings of historical importance.

Visitors come here to enjoy the special town vibe and experience boat tours through the Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve estuary, which is teeming with wildlife: flamingos, crocodiles, brown and while pelicans, herons, egrets, spoonbills, ibis, ospreys, eagles and more. The estuary is excellent for boating or paddle boarding, and the nearby Yucatán Gulf Coast beaches beckon with beautiful white sand and blue-green water.
You can take a boat to visit the famous “pink waters”, or “laguna rosada”, and the secluded beaches of the Gulf, including Playa Cancunita, are just a short boat ride or drive away. Within the town limits, a ten-minute walk from Centro, is the nature park, Chiquila, which has a restaurant but is free to the public to enjoy the entire park, which has a fresh water swimming pool so you have an excellent swimming spot you can walk to or ride your bike. The pool was also enjoyed by the ancient Maya, and some of their descendants here enjoy it to this day.
Hidden within the park mangroves: a boardwalk leading to the fresh water pond, Peten Mac, where you will see many bird species, butterflies, dragonflies, beautiful fish and maybe even cocodiles lazing in the sun; or, follow the little road leading the annual pilgrimage shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe where you can enter and enjoy the peaceful and many claim healing energy.
